Football Play Tracking App: Chart Every Snap Live

It's the second quarter, your stat volunteer is two plays behind, the clipboard is wet, and nobody can tell you whether that was 3rd & 4 or 3rd & 6. A football play tracking app fixes that only if it's faster than paper. Why paper charts break down on Friday night

Paper works until the game speeds up. A penalty, a sudden change of possession or a long run across midfield, and the chart falls behind. The bigger problem comes later: a paper chart is a picture, not data. Somebody has to type it into a spreadsheet before it can tell you anything.

A play tracking app should do three things paper can't:

• Keep the situation for you. Down, distance and ball spot should move on their own after each play.
• Survive bad signal. Stadium Wi-Fi and cell service are unreliable. Charting can't stop because a bar dropped.
• Feed everything else. The play you log at 7:42 pm should show up in your sideline tendencies right away and in your scouting report after the game, with no retyping.

What the Hashmarks Play Tracker does

Down, distance and field position advance automatically

Log a play with its result and gain or loss, and the next snap is set up for you: down, distance and yard line, including across midfield. Own 47 plus 8 yards puts the next play at the opponent's 45. Penalty yardage is accounted for too: flag the play, enter the team, the yards and whether it was accepted, declined or offset.

If a boundary play near the goal line comes out wrong, fix the yard line by hand before the next snap. Every field on a logged play can be edited later.

Voice entry: say the play, it fills the form

Your hands are full on the sideline. Tap the mic and say the play the way you'd say it on the headset: formation, call, result, yards. Hashmarks transcribes it, fills the form and logs it. Control phrases work too: say "next play" to log, or "undo" / "scratch that" to take it back.

Offline mode for stadiums with no signal

The tracker keeps working when the connection drops. Plays you log offline are stored on the device and sync in order when you're back online. The connection status on screen tells you where you stand.

Your whole staff on one game

More eyes, better data. Several people can chart the same game at once, and every play records who logged it. Plays are never renumbered after a deletion, so that record stays straight.

For volunteers who don't have a Hashmarks account, a coach can create a collector link for the game. It opens a charting page for that one game on the helper's own phone. Links expire (48 hours by default) and you can revoke them at any time.

Built for quick thumbs

Formation and play call fields suggest names from your own playbook as you type, and the QB, ball carrier and target fields suggest names already logged in the game, so the second time #22 carries it's one tap. Start with the basics (formation, play type, gain or loss) and add detail when you have a spare set of hands: personnel, ball carrier, pass target, QB, motion, direction, defensive front, coverage and penalties.

Flag football is supported too. Pick the flag format when you set up the game and the form changes to match.

What happens to the plays you log

This is where an app earns its place over a clipboard.

• During the game, every play feeds Sideline Intel: run/pass by down and distance, formation tendencies, QB and ball-carrier lines, and alerts when a pattern shows up.
• After the game, the same plays power the Play Analyzer: heatmaps, formation breakdowns, NFL-style advanced stats like success rate and explosive plays, and an exportable scouting report.

How to do it in Hashmarks

1. Get your team set up. Request free access, then add your season. Invite your staff from the Team page.
2. Add your playbook (optional, but worth it). Formation and play names in your playbook become autocomplete suggestions in the tracker.
3. Open the game and go live. From Games, pick the game and choose Go Live.
4. Set the opening situation. Ball side (OWN or OPP), yard line, 1st & 10 and the hash.
5. Log each play. Formation, play type, result and gain or loss, then Log Play. Or tap the mic and say it.
6. Bring in help. From the game page, share a collector link with a volunteer, or have other staff open the same game.

Tips from the sideline

• Split the work. One person on formation and call, another on result and yards. Assign roles before kickoff.
• Start lean. Formation, play type and gain or loss are enough to build tendencies. Add personnel and motion once your crew is comfortable.
• Chart the opponent too. Scouting a future opponent? Log their plays into a scouting game and the tendencies are ready for your staff meeting.
• Clean up after. Tap any play in the log to fix it. It's easier to correct on Saturday morning than to guess in December.

Frequently asked

Does it cost anything? No. Hashmarks is free for every program, from Pop Warner to college.

Do I need a tablet? No. The tracker is built for a phone held in one hand. A tablet works too.

Can I still use Hudl? Yes. Keep Hudl for video if you like it. Hashmarks can import your Hudl breakdown CSV and you can chart live in Hashmarks at the same time.
